40-foot containers can be used as portable storage solutions or even as secure portable office spaces. There are a lot of nationwide suppliers who offer the sale, rent, or lease of 40-foot containers.

40-foot containers can be used for a wide variety of applications including residential moves and renovations, construction, storage and more. 40-foot containers can be obtained from reliable nationwide suppliers who can furnish you with quality portable storage containers of varying sizes. These containers are highly durable and generally made from materials such as rust-resistant steel. 40-foot containers for cargo of varying size are ideal for on-site storage or use in the shipping of goods. Meanwhile, there are also models available that have been converted for use as temporary on-site offices. Many suppliers maintain selections of containers that often contain both new and refurbished models.

Benefits

Variability. With different suppliers, 40-foot containers can be created with different specifications. A 40-foot container can customized to be either waterproofed or insulated to suit the needs of a business. A plastic pallet floor can be added to help reduce the chance for leaks. A poly tarpaulin or canvas tarpaulin can be used to cover the storage container from the outside. This can prevent water damage by increasing the waterproof integrity of the container. A lot of suppliers can customize these containers for it to suit a particular business.

Space. A 40-foot container is the standard size for cargo, of which dimensions make it great for many purposes, such as international shipping, insulations, rail travel, and cargo ships. A 40-foot cargo container has an approximately seven by seven foot door, making it easy to load items. The capacity is approximately 303 square feet, suitable for a large amount of goods for travel.

Accessibility. Most 40-foot containers have various types of doors. Double door containers have two doors on each end of the container. This allows access to items on either end of the container, making it easier to reach items that were placed inside first. Other containers may have single doors or doors that can be pushed upwards to the ceiling. Most doors lock or have latching capabilities for security.

Storage. A 40-foot container is ideal for shipping solutions, but it can also be used as a stationary storage facility. A 40-foot container can be latched or locked, to keep items secure and safe inside. Also, it can be made as portable office spaces for temporary onsite business. Companies can also use it for storage of unused items. In this case, companies may readily move the container anytime there are needed transfers.

Pitfalls

40-foot containers have many benefits, but it may also have some pitfalls if not properly decided upon. For one, the size of the container is something that has to be considered. The space where you want it stored must be properly estimated. Meanwhile, there are also local laws and ordinances governing the use of these containers. You will have to take this into careful consideration in order not to end up with violations.

There are a lot of nationwide suppliers that offer a wide variety of options for your shipping container needs. However, before buying a shipping container, there are a several important things to consider.

Size. You will have to decide on what size of shipping container you need. Standard aluminum or steel shipping containers used in the United States come in three sizes:
L x H x W

45′ x 9′ 6″ x 8′ 6″

48′ x 9′ 6″ x 8′ 6″

53′ x 9′ 6″ x 8′ 6″

Meanwhile, ocean cargo containers, made of the highest quality steel, are available in the following standard sizes:
L x H x W

20′ x 8′ 6″ x 8′

40′ x 8′ 6″ x 8′

Material. You will also have to decide what grade of shipping container to purchase. There are “one-trip” or “new” shipping containers which are usually made in China and shipped to the United States. It is in “like-new” condition. Another type is the “cargo-worthy” type which is not considered “new” but is certified to ship cargo overseas. The third type are the “wind-tight and watertight” containers which are structurally sound and can resist wind and water. However, they have not been inspected and certified.

Space. You will have to prepare the delivery area. It has to be, at a minimum, twice the length of the container plus 10 feet in a straight line. For example, if you are expecting a 20-foot container, you will need at least 50 feet of space. The delivery area should be a level area for the container. If the area is not level, the doors on the shipping container may not function well. To make the container level, some wooden blocks may be used under the container. Also, proper drainage has to be ensured for the area, or else the container may sink.

Dents & Cracks. Many suppliers modify shipping containers to include custom paint, sliding doors, electrical outlets, heat or air conditioning units and many more options. You have to thoroughly inspect these features and make sure that these are functioning well. Otherwise, these might cause damage to container and to the contents that you intend to store. Look for corrosion or rust on the door seals and windows of the shipping container. Check for major dents. Ensure that there are no foul odors inside of the container that may contaminate whatever you will store. Make sure the doors open and close properly. Go inside of the container and look for cracks that expose daylight. Also ensure that any rust is surface-based. Otherwise, you might just end up damaging the items that you plan to store or ship.

Laws & Regulations. There are also local laws and ordinances governing the use of these containers. You will have to take this into careful consideration in order not to end up with violations. Before you buy, contact your local city or county office in order to determine if there are any ordinances against shipping containers in your area.

Plastic shipping containers are best solutions for portable storage or even as secure portable office spaces. There are a lot of nationwide suppliers who offer the sale, rent, or lease of 40-foot containers.

Plastic shipping containers are closed head containers that are blow molded with improved performance characteristics of high molecular weight high density polyethylene. It can withstand the rigors of distribution and permits a wide range of filling temperatures. Some plastic shipping containers are in a form of either cases or drums. Most plastic drums are corrosion resistant and compatible with a broad range of products from hazardous chemicals to foods.

Plastic shipping containers may have several benefits over those metal ones. For one, aesthetically, plastic shipping containers look more presentable than the metal ones. Also, most plastic shipping containers are corrosion free and rust free, unlike the metal shipping containers that may stain whatever it is that you are planning to store in or ship. However, there might be some pitfalls, too. Endurance of plastic shipping containers will always be outperformed by metal shipping containers. The strenght of material in metals is always higher than that in plastics.

Thus, before deciding on getting one, you will have to consider the different features and needs that may come in when choosing a plastic shipping container.

Many suppliers modify shipping containers to include custom paint, sliding doors, electrical outlets, heat or air conditioning units and many more options. You have to thoroughly inspect these features and make sure that these are functioning well. Otherwise, these might cause damage to container and to the contents that you intend to store.

Sea containers are built to standardized dimensions, and can be loaded and unloaded, stacked, transported efficiently over long distances, and transferred from one mode of transport to another—container ships, rail and semi-trailer trucks—without being opened.

Sea containers greatly reduced the expense of international trade and increased its speed, especially of consumer goods and commodities. The use of sea containers also dramatically changed the character of port cities worldwide. Prior to highly mechanized sea container transfers, crews of 20-22 longshoremen would pack individual cargoes into the hold of a ship. After the invention of sea containers, large crews of longshoremen were no longer necessary at port facilities.

There are five common standard lengths for sea containers, 20-ft (6.1 m), 40-ft (12.2 m), 45-ft (13.7 m), 48-ft (14.6 m), and 53-ft (16.2 m). United States domestic standard containers are generally 48 ft (15 m) and 53-ft (rail and truck). Container capacity is often expressed in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU, or sometimes teu). An equivalent unit is a measure of containerized cargo capacity equal to one standard 20 ft (length) × 8 ft (width) container. As this is an approximate measure, the height of the box is not considered, for instance the 9 ft 6 in (2.9 m) High cube and the 4-ft 3-in (1.3 m) half height 20 ft (6.1 m) containers are also called one TEU.

Before choosing the type of sea container to use, you will also have to decide what grade of shipping container to purchase.

Sea container architecture is the use of containers as the basis for housing and other functional buildings for people, either as temporary or permanent housing, and either as a main building or as a cabin or workshop. Containers can also be used as sheds or storage areas in industry and commerce. Containers are also beginning to be used to house computer data centers, although these are normally specialized containers.

Among the world’s top sea container shipping companies are Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha or the NYK based in Japan; the Evergreen Marine Corporation based in China; CMA-CGM based in France; Maersk, a shipping corporation based in Denmark; the Mediterranean Shipping Company, or MSC, a Swiss international cargo; Hapag-Lloyd, which is German-based; Hanjin of South KOrea; and, APL, an auxiliary company to the Singaporean Orient Shipping Lines.

There are a lot of nationwide suppliers that provide the lease, rent or sale of sea containers. Many suppliers provide sea containers for a wide variety of applications including residential moves and renovations, construction, storage and more. Various providers can supply customized sea containers. These companies also offer choices of types and grades of sea containers depending on planned usage.

On an international level used cargo containers are being put to use in innovative and inspiring ways. In recent years builders, architects and innovators have begun to put used used cargo containers to use in creative ways around the world. Container architecture has been promoted. Various providers can supply customized used cargo containers. These companies also offer choices of types and grades of used cargo containers depending on planned usage.

Before buying used cargo containers, you will have to decide on what size of used cargo container you need. Standard aluminum or steel used cargo containers used in the United States come in three sizes:

L x H x W
45′ x 9′ 6″ x 8′ 6″
48′ x 9′ 6″ x 8′ 6″
53′ x 9′ 6″ x 8′ 6″

Meanwhile, ocean cargo containers, made of the highest quality steel, are available in the following standard sizes:

L x H x W
20′ x 8′ 6″ x 8′
40′ x 8′ 6″ x 8′

You will also have to decide what grade of used cargo container to purchase. There are “one-trip” or “new” used cargo containers which are usually made in China and shipped to the United States. It is in “like-new” condition. Another type is the “cargo-worthy” type which is not considered “new” but is certified to ship cargo overseas. The third type are the “wind-tight and watertight” containers which are structurally sound and can resist wind and water. However, they have not been inspected and certified.

You will have to prepare the delivery area. It has to be, at a minimum, twice the length of the container plus 10 feet in a straight line. For example, if you are expecting a 20-foot container, you will need at least 50 feet of space. The delivery area should be a level area for the container. If the area is not level, the doors on the used cargo container may not function well. To make the container level, some wooden blocks may be used under the container. Also, proper drainage has to be ensured for the area, or else the container may sink.

There are also local laws and ordinances governing the use of these containers. You will have to take this into careful consideration in order not to end up with violations. Before you buy, contact your local city or county office in order to determine if there are any ordinances against used cargo containers in your area.

Ocean freight rate is the a price at which a certain cargo is delivered from one point to another through shipping depending on the form of the cargo, the weight of the cargo, and the distance to the delivery destination. Most shipping services use dimensional weight for calculating the price, which takes into account both weight and volume of the cargo.

Most of the time, ocean freight rates are rhythmical. It follows the strengths and weaknesses of the economies of the countries the carrier service. As most Asian countries have strong economies, vessels leaving Pacific Rim countries are filled with Ocean cargo. Therefore, ocean freight rates from the Pacific tend to be much higher than those coming from the USA. This is because a large number of containers are going back to the Pacific Rim empty from the USA. Most of the time, carriers charge premiums for space on their vessels and on the pier.

Some of the fees and surcharges that most forwarders or customs brokers or ocean carriers charge their customers are as follows:

Origin and Destination Terminal Handling Charges

Peak Season Surcharge

Automated Manifest Security Surcharge

Congestion Surcharge

Bill of Lading Issuance Fees

Detention/Demurrage Fees

Currency Adjustment Factor

Bunker Adjustment Factor

Others, as applicable

Although it can be quite seasonal on certain routes, the volume of grain trade is relatively stable between years. Meanwhile, trade volume of some of the industrial commodities including iron ore, steam coal, coking coal, cement, bauxite and forest products have in the past been more cyclical. Just like other commodities, ocean freight rates for grain and oilseeds are determined by the interaction of the demand for cargoes by ocean vessel owners and the supply of dry bulk cargoes by traders. Panamax-sized, Handimax-sized and Handy-sized vessels tend to be used more for grain trade, as sources and destinations for cargoes are more dispersed than for industrial commodities. Meanwhile, Larger Cape-sized vessels tend to be preferred for commodities like coal and iron ore for which cargo sources and destination are more concentrated.

There had been some very substantial cost increases for ship owners. However, with current freight rates this does not seem to have been a deterrent to investment. The freight market, specific to the grains sector, is the recovery in wheat output and export availability. Although the volume in seaborn trade is not expected to change much, voyage lengths are likely to shorten, reducing aggregate demand for ocean freight services by this sector.

As freight rates are rhythmical; ocean rates often fluctuate based on the market, the economy and the geographical location of the port. As at some point fees can be unpredictable, sea freight can be devastating if shippers quote the incorrect sea freight prices, especially for multi-container deals. Therefore, when planning to ship goods, it is very important to know what you are shipping, where you are sending it off, and which forwarder, carrier, or shipper can give you the best quote.

ANSWER:

1. It’s Christmas – so that is probably part of the delay – Canada has two statutory holidays off for Christmas so it could just be caught in customs.

2. This is not unusual and happens quite frequently – it is not just your parcel but lots of others as well.

OUR ADVICE

RELAX – you’ll have your package in a couple of days.

UPDATE

Thanks much for your advice – package arrived safely, no duty or tariffs, it was just as you said – a standard delay.
